Once upon a time...
People used to think that a design career wasn't really a good option to pick among several engineering or economic sciences...

Now it's completely different.

Why should people pay for "design"?
To make it short... we're not here to change the world. We're here to make things look beautiful.

Let's say for example, if I charge $400 for a logo or $800 to build a standard website, or $250 for a single icon... do you think a client would pick me for my pricing if they have another one charging them less than $500 for the whole package?

I've seen people selling themselves for $20 to do a logo. $200 to do a website. What kind of attitude is that?

Have you seen those cheap "comic sans" logos? Or those default-layer-styled signs? They are invading slowly the market lately, and the current crisis around the globe is not helping at all, since all the people that needs "professional" graphic work is now looking for the cheapest options available.

Speculative work aka "send me some drafts"
What about the people that request several "sketches" or "drafts" to see if you are "good enough" to be hired by them? What about logo contests? Many times they just take the best concepts (if there is any) and hire a designer (usually a junior) to just re-draw the idea.

In other exceptional cases, people end paying a "standard" price for a logo. Well... Why take so long deciding among drafts to end up paying the standard rates when you can pay the standard price and get a great logo in a more professional way.

The approach these people are pursuing is one that seriously compromises the quality of work they are entitled to and also violates a tacit, long-standing ethical standard in the communication design profession worldwide.

Capable and professional designers do not work for free, and requesting work for free demonstrates a lack of understanding and respect. There is an appropriate way to explore the work of various designers, and requesting drafts or opening contests to see if "there is an option we like" is just plain un-ethical.

Just my two cents on this matter. Thanks to AIGA for the references!

So... what are your thoughts on this matter? I'm open minded right now. i saw an UFO, so I'm ready for anything coming up. lol.

Love,
`m.

Why do you say that designers are not here to change the world?
I think you need to make the distinction between production artist and designers.
Although we are in the business of "making things look pretty" I think that is low level design. Design with an uppercase 'D" follows designers as world changers/thinkers and motivators. I'm finishing up my MFA in design right now and can clearly see the difference from designers who just want to make pretty things and designers that want to affect change. Places like World Studio ([link]) and their Design Ignites Change program or firms like IDEO who look at design as a place for thinking and changing policies are a good place to start. These people can navigate any Adobe program like it was second nature but would rather try to change hearts and minds.

Granted there is a place in the world for people to just do straight design. But I think that Design Thinking is where our field needs to move.

People just need to learn to network. I dont have a degree in design, and i dont charge as much as alot of my competition in the area 200$ for a logo 750-1300$ website, but if you can get people to talk good about you, there always seems to be plenty of work. There is that whole other side of working freelance that you need to be kind and polite to the people you are working for, i have taken cheap work just because i knew i would get more work out of it, and once they liked my style and were hooked i could raise my price and they would continue to pay me. It takes time to build a good rep, and find good clients, you cant rush into anything and think its going to be perfect.

I have a lot of pressure on me. I've really no design experience whatsoever and I am doing design work for my dad's company, because I know how to use Photoshop and can make cool pictures for people to use in Counter-strike, that seem designer-ish. I can do anything with photoshop and am so incredibly keen to learn and understand design, but I'm afraid to take the leap and start practicing each day and learn by the examples of others. I know that design is something I want to do so I aim to take a 2yr design course and get a diploma in that and then do a 2yr 3D course, so that I am able to incorporate the two skills into one.

Unfortunately, I don't have all of the abilities of an exceptional designer. I can get ideas when the time is right and I can put them into practice, but if I don't have a very clear guide on what I am to do, then I get lost very easily. I'm not all that creative either, unless I see the work of someone else and get inspiration from it. I also often have a bit of trouble clearly visualising what I want too which can make it difficult. I see all these other incredible designers and want to be able to learn through what they've done, but for me it is so hard to mould the technique into my own style and really make it my own, if that makes sense.

I guess to put it simply, I'm probably one of the ';psuedo-designers' that you and osox were talking about. I can use the software, but I don't fully understand all the principles that make up a great design. I can recognise them easily, but I need more practice at applying them. And I am so eager to learn those principles too and move away from just knowing how to use the software, to being someone that CAN use the software AND can create something brilliant.

Mmm. Thats just what I'm struggling with right now :( I don't plan on giving up on design, because I do enjoy it and I think that it is something I could do well in. I aspire to be like you manicho, and all the other incredible designers in this world.

that people think on pennies, they get pennies, we think on dollars we get dollars.

like in every field there'll be someone willing to do it cheaper than you and if there's noone than you're damn doing it free, or actually giving some bucks to the client haha :P, but as i said, cheap stuff is everywhere and people that buy cheap stuff will get cheap stuff, there are cases (the ones we're talking about) from people who really know what they're doing and they work cheap, it has to be for the country they are maybe or they need to believe more in themselves, and a lot of factors that you can end with a giant list, i personally ask for the money i think i deserve, for my quality, my timeframes and my skills, and my brain damage creating concepts lol! :P, and when someone tell me i'm working for cheap i reconsider.

Once in the begginings a client contacted me to do a logo (actually on my gallery) "MyDrinkPal" and charged like $70 for it, when we finish the work he told me i was charging way less for what i should charge, the previous "logo" was a shit, and they charged $500 for that "logo", something he told me it was when they saw the guy was charging $500 they tought! "that guy really knows how to do it", but it didn't mean exactly that.

the lesson is charge what you think your time and work is worth and keep getting updated, the more time you work in this, the more your skills are, the more experience you have; the more you can charge.
